Noam Chomsky ist der prominenteste us-amerikanische Kritiker des Kapitalismus. Geboren 1928 in Philadelphia veröffentlichte der Sprachwissenschaftler, politischer Aktivist und Publizist mehr als 150 Monographien. Seine Beiträge reichen von der Linguistik über Psychologie zu politischen Schriften. In letzteren bezog er Position gegen die US-amerikanische Außenpolitik. Innenpolitisch unterstützt er den linken Demokraten Bernie Sanders, er wirft der Internationalen Politik das Scheitern in der Klimakrise vor, kritisiert die nationalistisch-rechtsgerichtete Politik Israels und fordert  internationale Unterstützung für die Rechte der Palästinenser. In dem Gespräch wird die Beziehung zwischen den USA und der EU diskutiert. Das Gespräch wurde 1999 in Boston am Massachusetts-Institut für Technologie (MIT) im Büro von Noam Chomsky aufgenommen.

Der Schriftsteller und Politiker bekannte sich seit den 50er Jahren offen zu seiner Homosexualität. In seinen Romanen griff er immer wieder gesellschaftliche Reizthemen auf, mischte sich in öffentliche Diskussionen ein und wurde schon 1968 im Fernsehen als ”queer” beschimpft.
